Oishii Launches New Strawberry Variety
Vertical farming company Oishii announced the release of the Nikko Berry, its third strawberry variety, on April 14. Meaning “sunshine” in Japanese, the Nikko Berry is tart, crisp, and has a balanced sweetness – it’s also the company’s lowest priced product to date.
The Nikko Berry joins the Omakase Berry, which is inspired by the Japanese phrase “we leave it up to you,” and the Koyo Berry, which means “elated” in Japanese, to further diversify its strawberry offerings.
Here’s how this new strawberry differs from Oishii’s other varieties:
- The Nikko Berry grows more berries per plant, allowing the company to sell it at a lower price point.
- Oishii includes more fruit in each package of Nikko berries.
Last month, Oishii announced the strategic acquisition of Tortuga AgTech’s key intelligence property (IP) and assets, as well as members of Tortuga’s engineering team. This move aims to advance the output and efficiency of Oishii’s robotic harvesting capabilities, which will help the company lower its harvesting and product expenses.
Marrying indoor farming innovation with the care and precision of centuries-old Japanese farming techniques, Oishii recreates nature’s elements through AI-powered smart environments to grow fruit with enhanced flavor.
