Extension Specialist/Associate Professor – Horticulture and Southern Region SARE Coordinator of Virginia State University

Dr. Sanjun Gu Ph.D joined Virginia State University (VSU) as an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist of Horticulture, as well as the Southern Region SARE Coordinator for Virginia in 2023. Before VSU, Dr. Gu served as the Horticulture Extension Specialist and SARE Coordinator at N.C. A&T State University, having made his way from Lincoln University of Missouri, where he was the State Horticulture Specialist and an Assistant Professor. Prior to that, Dr. Gu was the Viticulture Program Leader at the Kentucky State University.

Dr. Gu’s areas of expertise and interest include organic and conventional vegetable and small fruit production, vegetable grafting, season extension with high tunnels, plant tissue culture, and plant breeding. His research and extension programs focus on increasing on-farm efficiency and profitability of small, limited-resource farmers. Dr. Gu has conducted vegetable and small fruit research with low tunnels and high tunnels for over 20 years. He also had taught Vegetable Production and Season Extension courses at N.C. A&T and NC State University.
